So, this happened...
Tim, along with Drew vacationing on Antigua, texted a brief account of his chance meetup with Robert Deniro:
He asked lots of questions - I told him about my work and that I admired his. We talked some about Miramax and Harvey and that terrible story. He was funny - he said he guessed Drew and I live in Silver Lake in Los Angeles and I joked “are we that big of a stereotype?!” And he laughed and said no, but he loves Silver Lake.
We talked about audience Q&A and how interesting they can be and how once we do a film, it belongs to the audience. I told him about my 2019 pledge to not publicly criticize any art - just as an experiment - and how much better it made me feel. He asked a lot about students at usc and I told him about Drew and what he does (drew was sitting across from us and couldn’t hear us well)
We also talked about politics a little - after I told him about Dear Jesse he asked about Lindsey Graham and said, “he’s gay, right?”
I told him I loved The Irishman and he seemed surprised when i said it was “a quiet film.”
Finally, I just said “are you talkin’ to me?” Repeatedly until he walked away.
Ok that last one is a lie.
Very nice guy. He’s really warm and incredibly interested. He asked so many questions it was tough for me to steer the conversation in any direction! I was just happy to be there.
